The Need for a Functional State-of-the-Art Bus Terminal Design in Enugu Metropolis, Nigeria.

Every A properly designed transport terminal is essential for effective functionality of any city as it facilitates the movement of people, materials and goods for socio-economic integration. Incidentally, most cities of developing countries such as Enugu Nigeria, seems not to have adequately benefited from such standard terminal designs. In recent times, Enugu is faced with urban traffic congestion and this have attracted the attention of urban designers in view of urban architecture standards. This study therefore looked into urban bus terminals in Enugu metropolis with a view to determining sustainable solution towards improving efficiency of operations, passengers access and management control of road transport services in the city. The survey design approach was adopted with a sample size of 400 respondents comprised of Architects sampled across the 18-formal urban neighbourhoods of the city. Findings showed that traffic congestion within the CBD areas like the Okpara Avenue axis, the Ogbete Main Market area, the Old Park and Agbani Road axis among others were as a result of the nature of the city design which characterized of lopsided concentration of various transport companies within the city centre as affirmed by 100% response rate. This study therefore proposed for the design of a functional State-of-the-Art Bus Terminal for Enugu metropolis towards facilitating the transport infrastructural development. This will take advantage of the private sector initiative in line with the National Economic Empowerment and Development Strategy (NEEDS) framework in order to eliminate the prevailing perennial intra-city traffic congestion that is currently experienced in the city.
