Modern cartographic support is an important indicator of the demand for cartographic methods in solving applied problems of scientific and production activities with the help of digital cartographic products. The article presents the results of the bibliographic analysis of publications on the subject, carried out in the period from 1971 to 2025. The stages of the national cartographic support development of the late Soviet (1971–1991) and Russian (1991 – present) periods are identified and characterised. The time limits are set according to the statistical distribution of the number of publications and qualitative changes in the emergence of new types of digital cartographic products, means of their production and use. The results indicate the demand for preparation and use of cartographic materials for solving the problems of nature management, subsoil use and other activities. The problems of the unambiguous use of the term “cartographic support”, which contribute to the increase of the importance of other types of spatial data support, have been revealed. The need to scientifically substantiate the modern composition of the final results of cartographic support, and also to modernise and develop other approaches to understanding its essence has been established.
