This study aims to empirically investigate the effects of male hair length on impression formation and perceived professional competence, with a focus on the moderating roles of the observers generational background and psychological characteristics (hair satisfaction and interest). A survey was conducted among individuals categorized into the MZ generation and the Older generation to analyze social perception across various hair lengths ranging from Short Cut to Long. The results of the study are as follows. First, hair length was found to be a critical non-verbal cue significantly affecting all dimensions of social perception. While Short Cut styles generally received higher scores in trustworthiness and organizational fit, a decline in social acceptance was observed as hair length increased. Second, a significant generational gap was identified; the MZ generation exhibited a markedly higher tolerance for non-traditional styles, such as long hair, compared to the Older generation. Notably, while both generations shared similar aesthetic standards for likability, their perceptions diverged sharply regarding organizational fit, where the Older generation maintained more rigid, traditional norms. Third, the observer’s psychological traits—specifically hair satisfaction and involvement—served as significant moderators. Observers with higher satisfaction and interest in hairstyles demonstrated greater psychological flexibility, perceiving diverse styles as a form of professional self-expression rather than a lack of competence. These findings suggest that perceiving male hairstyles is a complex process reconstructed by the observer’s internal values and generational schema. Practically, this study highlights the need for flexible grooming standards and segmented marketing strategies reflecting shifting generational sensibilities.
