Adaptive learning systems based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) are transforming the world of education by providing customized delivery of curriculum, ongoing evaluation, and data-driven learning processes. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 of India promotes digital transformation and individualized learning, so the involvement of AI is a precondition to the implementation of the desired objectives. This paper analyzes the opportunities and challenges of the implementation of AI-based adaptive learning systems in Indian universities and synthesizes the available literature and secondary data. It illuminates the ways in which adaptive systems can be used to improve learning, inclusive education, and equitable access, as well as ways to overcome barriers, including a lack of digital infrastructure, faculty not being ready, and concerns about data governance. The results indicate that the NEP 2020 vision can be greatly assisted to be facilitated with the implementation of AI-based adaptive learning and capacity building.
