The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a significant shift in the Indian education system by emphasizing digital transformation as a key driver of quality, access, and inclusivity in higher education. The policy recognizesthe potential of digital technologies to overcome geographical, economic, and infrastructural barriers that have traditionally limited educational opportunities. Initiatives such as online learning platforms, virtual laboratories, digital repositories, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and the use of artificial intelligence are encouraged to promote flexible and student-centric learning. NEP-2020 also highlights the importance of digital infrastructure, teacher capacity building, and blended learning models to ensure effective implementation. Institutions are expected to adopt technology-enabled teaching, continuous digital assessment, and multidisciplinary learning frameworks. However, challenges such as the digital divide, lack of digital literacy, and infrastructure constraints remain critical concerns. This paper examines the role of digital transformation under NEP-2020, its impact on Indian higher education, and the opportunities and challenges associated with its implementation. The study aims to analyze how digital initiatives can contribute to an equitable and future-ready education system in India.
