The archaeological monitoring and recording comprised the observation by a competent archaeologist of all intrusive groundworks associated with the proposed development. These works comprised the machine excavation of nineteen launch pits measuring 4m by 1.5m, five Service trenches measuring 3m by 1.2m, one compound area and two trial holes to locate an existing water main measuring 1.2m by 1.4m, all associated with the installation of a new water pipe by directional drilling. Between December 2024 and March 2025, Cotswold Archaeology carried out a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording during groundworks associated with the installation of a water main and one compound area at Wittering Ford Road, Barnack, Peterborough. The archaeological monitoring and recording confirmed the presence of an undated ditch in drill pit 3 at the northern end of the proposed pipe line. The stratigraphic sequence varied along the pipeline. The natural substrate varied from a sandy silt with frequent limestone inclusions, to a fine sand, and a compact limestone. The natural substrate was generally overlain by a sequence of subsoil and sealed by an upper layer of plough soil. No other features of archaeological interest were observed.
