Abstract

A 5.32ha strip area was monitored in advance of the northward enlargement of extraction works in 2017. A small number of linear ditches of post-medieval/modern date were recorded, together with one undated ditch and an undated pit. The ditches define boundaries of parts of the post-medieval land enclosure system. Most of these appear on late 19th and early 20th century OS mapping and define rectilinear fields that existed until the construction of the WW2 airfield. However, some of the ditches recorded may be associated with the WW2 airfield infrastructure or land use post-WW2.
