Land planning laws are tools for achieving sustainable urban and peri-urban areas internationally, regionally, and nationally. This article evaluates the role of land planning laws in achieving sustainable urban and peri-urban areas in Tanzania. The article adopts the doctrinal legal research methodology to assess different land planning laws in Tanzania and their mechanisms to ensure sustainability in urban and peri-urban areas. Land planning laws significantly contribute to orderly and sustainable urban and peri-urban areas via planning consent, zoning restrictions, environmental impact assessment, urban planning space standards, designation of conservation areas, land suitability assessment, historical or architectural interests, and land use plans. However, the effectiveness of the land planning laws is limited because of the discretionary powers of land use, planning and management vested in the authorities responsible for enforcement. Therefore, this article calls for legislative amendments to enhance the enforcement of land planning laws to achieve sustainable urban and peri-urban areas in Tanzania.
