ABSTRACT China has abundant abalone resources and a long history of abalone consumption. Abalone aquaculture is an important economic and social activity in China's coastal provinces. The country's abalone production has increased significantly in recent decades, and it is now the largest producer and consumer of abalone in the world. This research outlines the current status of the abalone industry in China, including overall domestic production trends, producing areas, main farming species, natural food and feed products, aquaculture models, market prices and consumption, processing, and import and export trade. Furthermore, this study identifies challenges in the development of China's abalone industry and proposes a series of solutions to ensure the sustainability of the abalone industry. It provides a basic reference for future studies and policy‐making in the field of the abalone sector. Although the current study focuses on China, the challenges and solutions discussed have considerably broader implications for the global abalone industry.
