In order to reflect the properties of the cable-stayed bridge better, a more complex cable-stayed bridge model with eight cables is investigated. Based on Hamilton’s variational principle, the mathematical model of a cable-stayed bridge is established. By using a transfer matrix method, an efficient and simplified computation of the eigensolutions of the model of a cable-stayed bridge can be obtained. In the following, the derivation of the nonlinear dynamic model and the parametric effect of the linear properties of the cable-stayed bridge are investigated. According to the introduction of the piecewise function of the mode shapes, the occurrence of global and local modes can be explained by the mechanical characteristics. Then, considering the different subcases of the cable-stayed bridge, a parametric investigation and the solutions of the modulation equations are studied.
