Modern control science originated from the centrifugal speed governor of the handicraft industry, following which a variety of control technologies of different function were derived. These were applied in many fields, such as transportation, military, communications and so on. After cybernetics was developed, control science became an independent, complete and promising scientific system. In general, from the 1600s to the 1940s, driven by societal technological needs, the world's cognition of control science changed from tacit knowledge to verbal knowledge, the form of technology developed from control elements to control systems, and researchers' exploration methods moved from technical exploration to theoretical research. This early development process of modern control science has great significance for China to continue and deepen scientific research and technological development in control science and multiple other fields.
