Abstract Introduction Research has shown that comfort, including the comfort of the mattress, is essential to sleep quality. In addition to comfort, factors such as pressure relief and temperature regulation contribute to how restorative sleep feels. This study compared sleep on a spring mattress to participants’ baseline sleep on their original mattresses. Methods Healthy adults (N = 60; 71% female; M age = 45) who reported nighttime awakenings or discomfort during sleep participated in a 10-week in-home field study using a pre-post design. Participants slept on their original mattresses for four weeks, followed by six weeks on a Sleepy’s by Sealy Spring Mattress, including a two-week adjustment period. Objective sleep was measured nightly using a PSG-validated, noncontact biomotion device, SleepScore Max. Daily and end-of-period surveys assessed perceived comfort, support, pressure relief, cooling, pain, tossing and turning, and sleep quality. Analyses included multilevel regression and paired t-tests (α=.05). Results Across 2,242 tracked nights, participants showed objective improvement in sleep architecture: a 2% increase in the proportion of the night spent in deep sleep and a 2% reduction in light sleep compared to baseline. Self-report data revealed numerous perceived benefits, including fewer aches and pains (-45%) and increases in mattress coolness (+91%), comfort (+48%), support (+100%), and pressure relief (+133%). Participants also reported fewer nights per week spent tossing and turning (-40%), better perceived sleep quality (+88%), sleep satisfaction (+102%), and feeling well-rested in the morning (+86%). Conclusion Sleeping on a spring mattress was associated with an increase in deep sleep duration and numerous self-reported benefits, including greater comfort, support, and sleep satisfaction compared to participants’ original mattresses.
