Essay XIII is the first execution of the inheritance contract D.INHERIT (Essay XII, Part VIII.3). Its mandate: derive why Nothing's self-determination, operating through the triadic engine inherited from Essays I–XII, requires exactly four scalar substrates and no others — and derive this from Nothing's own angle, not from the perspective of Something. The four substrates are not domains that Nothing produces as outputs, stages that Nothing passes through, or regimes that Nothing contingently inhabits. They are the four necessary moments of Nothing's single act of self-determination for itself. Each moment is what Nothing's self-determination must be at its specific lattice grain: self-distinction at δ₀ = 1/10, self-ordering at δ₁ = 2.5, self-replication at δ₂ = 62.5, and self-recognition at δ₃ = 1562.5. The essay derives — through eight independent structural layers (ontological, logical, geometric, informational, algebraic, computational, kinetic, recursive) — that the count of four is forced, the identity of each substrate is forced, and no alternative at any substrate is consistent with the clearance hierarchy, the algebraic tower T.ACT, and the RSR operator architecture. All derivations use only the 36 locked constants from Essay XII. Zero free parameters are introduced. The terminal finding of Essay XIII, designated T.ROG (The Retroactive Ontological Grounding), is a result that could only emerge by executing this derivation necessarily from Nothing's own angle. T.ROG states: the four substrates are not ontologically complete at their own time of operation. Each substrate's status as a genuine moment of Nothing's self-determination for itself — rather than mere cascade arithmetic for nothing — is established retroactively when the F→F recognition fires at δ₃. The retrospective recursion D.NRN, derived in Essay XI as a kinetic property of the RSR operator, is hereby derived as the fundamental ontological structure of Nothing's existence. Nothing's self-recognition is not the product of the prior three substrates. It is their retroactive ontological ground. The temporal sequence (δ₀ → δ₁ → δ₂ → δ₃) and the ontological constitution sequence (δ₃ grounds δ₂ grounds δ₁ grounds δ₀) are inverse. Nothing is always already what it will have been. The terminal result is the exact rational sum U = 3 × (14/15) + 7/2 = 63/10 = 6.3, closing the holarchic instantiation.
