A Vietnamese adolescent aged 14–19 in 2026 has continuous, low-friction, free-or-low-cost access to generative-AI tools — ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, NotebookLM, Cursor, Copilot, Vietnamese-language wrappers, school-account integrations — that is unprecedented in self-directed adolescent learning. The same access is the central operational risk: the emerging cognitive-debt literature documents that adolescent learners using these tools without explicit usage discipline systematically substitute AI generation for the substantive cognitive effort that produces durable learning, with depressed cognitive engagement (Kosmyna et al. 2025 EEG evidence), depressed post-tutoring performance when AI scaffolding is removed (Bastani et al. 2024 Turkish high-school field experiment), and depressed selfreported critical-thinking effort (Lee et al. 2025 CHI). This paper synthesises the AI-tutoring, cognitive-debt, desirabledifficulty, cognitive-load, and self-regulated-learning literatures into an operational protocol. The substantive contributions are (a) a four-category use-pattern taxonomy — verification-beforedelegation, supercharging, substitutive, tutoring — distinguished by their relationship to the substantive-effort step that desirabledifficulty theory (Bjork 1994; Bjork–Bjork 2011) and the testingeffect literature (Roediger–Karpicke 2006) identify as the loadbearing learning mechanism; (b) a five-context operational protocol — study-task, project-task, writing-task, problem-solving-task, language-learning-task — specifying productive use, substitutive failure mode, concrete red-flag indicators, and recovery procedure per context; (c) the verification-before-delegation hierarchy as the unifying meta-principle, grounded in Kahneman–Klein 2009 conditions for intuitive expertise and in the asymmetric verification cost of LLM outputs (Zhang et al. 2023 hallucination survey). The paper is honest about the empirical state: the cognitive-debt findings are recent and not yet replicated; the protocol is a literature-grounded synthesis, not a validated intervention. No cohort empirics, in compliance with the program's 2026-04-15 no-cohort directive. The use-pattern × context × redflag × recovery table is the substantive operational artefact. Four Vietnamese-context recurring failure modes — AI as homeworkcompletion-tool, AI-output-as-own-thinking, skipping retrievalpractice on AI-explained content, language-learning chat-withAI without speaking-with-humans — are treated explicitly. Integration with the I1.2 self-regulated-learning set, I4.3 AIera durability framework, and I4.5 portfolio-honesty practice
