US airports have primarily relied on relatively costly residential sound insulation programs to mitigate aircraft noise in their communities which are also limited in low frequencies and vibration effectiveness. Application of Active Noise Control (ANC), i.e., producing noise of the same magnitude but opposite in phase, may be another less costly tool in airports’ toolboxes to mitigate aircraft noise, especially ground-based noise like that from the start-of-takeoff roll from departures. The Louisville Regional Airport Authority in Kentucky is procuring an ANC System, via a grant by the Federal Aviation Administration, designed to actively reduce aircraft noise in communities exposed to the start-of-takeoff roll adjacent to Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. This paper describes the evolution of the system, its specifications, testing, challenges, and its performance to-date. This paper also describes the potential next steps targeting the future installation and optimization of the system at SDF and other locations.
