This paper shows how over the last 150 years, archaeology in Berkshire has grown from a large varied subject of interest to a few Society members into a small-scale industry focussed on researching, revealing and recording the heritage and archaeology of Berkshire. It also shows that from its formation in 1871 to the late 1970s the Society, sometimes led, but always supported, these changes so that by 1980 most of the key areas of work were in the hands of archaeological professionals. The paper then goes on to show how, since 2002, the Society has embraced activities which enable it to make positive contributions to our understanding of the archaeology of Berkshire.
