Historic building recording of Stowford Mill, Ivybridge, Devon (NGR SX 63645 56539), was undertaken by AC archaeology between September 2017 and April 2018. Stowford Mill is a former paper mill, and is Grade II Listed. The majority of the recorded historic mill buildings, which consist of the main mill building, boiler house, engine houses, rag boiling building, machine rooms, office building and stock rooms were established in a significant phase of mid-19th century (1850s and 1860s) rebuilding of the complex. These replaced an earlier mill. During the later 19th century there were several additions, and in the early-20th-century two engine houses and additional finishing buildings were added. Partial rebuilding took place following a fire in the main mill building in 1914, and during the remainder of the 20th century the mill was modernised with new paper machines and changes to the power sources. The paper mill stands within an historic estate that also includes parkland features, the leat and mill pond, a walled garden, a 'farm' yard and a waste water treatment works. All these buildings, structures and landscape features were recorded and are reported on. The results of a limited watching brief are also reported on. The report also includes a detailed discussion on the development of the mill complex, and the history of its power sources.
