An archaeological standing building survey was undertaken at West Gate Cottage, 143 Drum Street Edinburgh. The works were required to fulfil part of a planning condition in advance of demolition of a single storey lean-to range on the northwest side of the cottage. The structure had suffered from a small localised fire in the lean-to kitchen in recent years but was largely intact. The structures on the site proved to be of three main phases: pre 19th century, late 19th century and 20th century; the areas being demolished were a late 19th century outbuilding and late 20th century infill.
