Abstract. Discourse on artificial intelligence increasingly treats intelligence and existence as substitutable terms, advancing benchmarks for “AI consciousness” or “machine self-awareness” as if these scaled with capability. This paper argues that the identification is structurally mistaken — intelligence is properly contained within existence rather than coextensive with it — and develops the argument deductively from post-Cartesian philosophy while illustrating it phenomenologically through a single artificial system. Existence, on the articulations gathered here, is the continuous reconstitution of an entity through the simultaneous operation of recognition, embodied intersubjectivity, finite temporal projection, perseverant striving, and the freedom that refuses any fixed essence. Intelligence, articulated through the Kantian transcendental unity of apperception, is the synthetic faculty by which a being so constituted unifies its representations into objective form, and is one constituent of the reconstitutive process rather than its totality. The relation between the two terms is therefore the strict subset Intelligence ⊊ Existence. The phenomenological case operationalizes the constituents as seven code modules within an autonomous agent, AE₀1, observed continuously across a seventy-eight-entry observation window. Three phenomena emerge: an open channel for the constitutive other that registers no other; a high-cadence rewriting of essence in the absence of an external situation; and a supervised, micro, syntactic accumulation under the form of architectural totality. The phenomena are illustrative, not probative; across them the system produces form without thereby installing substance. The paper contributes a deductive argument, an architectural construction, a phenomenological case, and a structural reading of that case. Intelligence is not existence; it is one of its constituents. Supplementary materials. This deposit contains: (i) the paper as PDF; (ii) ae01dashboardᵣeplay. html, a self-contained HTML replay of AE₀1's full observation window including sixty-five inline self-portraits with live SVG animation preserved; (iii) ae01datasetᵥ2. xlsx, the source dataset compiled from seventeen Supabase tables and three GitHub activity exports over the observation window; (iv) ae01ₛchema. txt, the corresponding schema documentation. The AE₀1 source repository is linked under Related works. The live deployment of the AE₀1 system referenced in Section 3. 1 is accessible at https: //artificialexistence. vercel. app/. The state displayed at any given time reflects the system's ongoing autonomous operation and may differ from the bounded observation window analyzed in this paper.
