Digital technologies for visualizing virtual objects and environments are gaining popularity in cultural heritage. VR is becoming an essential tool for studying, analyzing, and enhancing this field, allowing one to visualize how cultural heritage has changed and what has been lost over time. The reconstruction of the Fortress of Riolo is included among the “research cases” in WP5. This work aligns with the goals of WP5 in Spoke 4 of the “CHANGES” project, supporting the objectives outlined in “Theme 1: Digital Transformation and Cultural Heritage”. The project aims to create a VR experience compatible with headsets to enhance the engagement and communicative impact of the 15th-century Fortress of Riolo reconstruction. The Fortress of Riolo is a significant example of medieval military architecture located in the small town of Riolo Terme (Ravenna – Italy). The virtual reality focuses on the East Tower, as well as the Fortress and village in their 15th-century form. The project includes different VR scenarios that highlight the key historical aspects of the medieval village of Riolo, supported by thorough documentary research for accurate reconstruction. Experimentation with digital technologies, the creation of multimedia products related to specific digital storytelling strategies, and the identification of optimal solutions for their fruition have made it possible to improve the accessibility, enjoyment, and knowledge of the Fortress's heritage.
