Eight mentally retarded boys comprised an experimental group which received an intensive program of physical education. The study covered a 30 day period, with the experimental group leaving their special class for one hour training periods five times per week for four weeks. Eight mentally retarded boys in the control group followed the same schedule but engaged only in quiet activities. Equal attention and praise were accorded both groups. The training group made significant IQ gain scores as measured by the PPVT. In addition, the training group made significant gain scores on the Youth Fitness Test and the Cowell Personal Distance Scale.
