The current research article is an endeavor to highlight the increasing significance of the green banking activities being followed in India, and their significance in achieving sustainable financial development as well as environmental protection. The focus is on the environmentally sustainable banking practices, namely digital banking, paperless transactions, financing on renewable energy, eco-friendly banking infrastructure, green loans, and sustainable systems which have been adopted by Indian banks. This research is carried out using both primary and secondary data. Primary data has been collected using a structured questionnaire from 120 banking customers (from urban and semi-urban areas) on their knowledge, adoption of, and perception towards green banking. Secondary data has been collected from reports of the Reserve Bank of India, banking journals, sustainability reports, government documents, and articles related to sustainable finance and digital banking. This paper observes that customers are tending to adopt and prefer mobile banking, internet banking, digital payment services, and e-statements as these offer convenience and cut down the costs, and also the paper usage. The article also throws light upon the environmental and economic advantages of implementing the green banking services such as reducing carbon emissions, saving natural resources, energy efficiency and increased productivity in banks. This article is able to explain about various challenges in implementing green banking such ascyber security and threat issues, technological challenges, low literacy in the rural part of the country and high costs of establishing infrastructure, but if implemented correctly, the study has pointed out that green banking has the potential to contribute to the sustainability of the economy with collaboration of the banking industry, regulators, government, and customers.
