Pre-Construct Archaeology Limited (PCA) was commissioned to undertake an archaeological Watching Brief at the Visitor Admissions Centre, Windsor Castle, Castle Hill, Windsor, Berkshire. The site is located on the southern side of Castle Hill, east of the Royal Mews and west of St Albans Street, adjacent to Windsor Castle. A number of archaeological features were identified and recorded during the watching brief, these features are considered to be related to building and demolition activities from the early 19th century onwards. The features identified indicate that the Site (Plate 5) was repeatedly built on and developed from the 1830s until the present day. Many of the features survive, and were recorded, in isolation and do not form readily coherent structures in the limited extent of groundwork in which they were observed. However, features 12 and 13, taken together with layer (28) appear to represent a single structure and Feature 15 appears to represent a garden feature. The Site would appear to contain evidence for a number of 19th century and possibly earlier structures as well as residual finds probably derived from use of the Site in earlier centuries; these findings are in keeping with the results of the evaluation of the Site.
