Abstract

This document is a Written Scheme of Investigation (WSI) for a programme of archaeological investigation on land south of Unit 16 Craven Arms Business Park, Stokewood Road, Craven Arms, Shropshire, SY7 8NR. It has been prepared by SLR Consulting for Ringway Infrastructure Services (the Client). The site is currently in use as a grassed recreational area, to the south of the existing Highways Depot, located at NGR SO43028327 (343025.283275). The site has planning approval for the extension of the Highways Depot (planning ref: 12/02287/FUL). A condition placed on permission requires that a programme of archaeological work is carried out at the site prior to development commencing. A brief for the archaeological programme has been provided by the local authority (Krupa October 2011 Shropshire Council). This requires archaeological monitoring of an initial phase of topsoil stripping, followed by planning and review of exposed surface and archaeological remains, and a subsequent campaign of archaeological excavation and recording of the features and deposits revealed by the strip. This WSI outlines the methodology and scope of the archaeological works. It has been prepared with reference to the Institute for Archaeologists (IfA) Standard and Guidance for an Archaeological Excavation (2008). SLR is a Registered Organisation with the IfA, an audited status which confirms that work is carried out to the highest standards of the profession.
