In June 2016 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out an archaeological evaluation on land south of East End, Hilgay, Norfolk (centred on NGR TL 6232 9860). The evaluation was undertaken in compliance with a condition attached to planning permission for the construction of two dwellings (Kings Lynn and West Norfolk Council Planning Reference 15/01830/O), based on the advice of Norfolk County Council Historic Environment Service (NCC HES). Archaeological features were recorded in all three trenches. The density of features ranged from two per trench (Trench 1) to seven per trench (Trench 3). The features comprised linears (ditches) and discretes (pits). Though the dating evidence was not prolific it was consistent with the pottery dating to the Saxo-Norman and early - high medieval periods (c.11th - 13th/14th century). The assemblages contained a range of other material; CBM, animal bone and shell. The dates of the pottery recovered from the recorded features suggests that the archaeology present here was contemporary with the moated enclosure (NHER 4454; SAM 342) and potentially represents directly related activity.
