In January 2018 Archaeological Solutions Ltd (AS) carried out a programme of archaeological monitoring and recording at Castledene, Castle Road, Wormegay, Kings Lynn, Norfolk PE33 0SG (NGR TF 65947 11863; Figs.1 - 2). The monitoring was carried out to comply with a planning condition attached to planning approval for the construction of a garage (King's Lynn Planning Approval Ref. 17/02022/F), based on the advice of Norfolk County Council Historic Environment Service (NCC HES). The proposed new garage plot lies within the residential property of Castledene, on the northern side of Castle Road in the core of the village of Wormegay. The remains of a motte-and-bailey castle, Scheduled as an Ancient Monument, lie close by to the south. Monitoring by AS in 2013 during construction of another detached garage/games room on the northern part of the site revealed no archaeological remains (Barlow 2013). The village of Wormegay is believed to have developed around the castle after the Norman Conquest, and likely replaced an earlier settlement centred on St Michael's Church to the east (NHER 3474). The HER also records pottery finds of Roman, medieval and post-medieval date to the west (NHER 3444) and medieval pottery finds to the north west (NHER 24130). In the event the monitoring revealed no archaeological features or finds.
