In June 2009 ARCUS were commissioned by Severn Trent Water to undertake an archaeological watching brief on a 2.2km length of the Breamfield to Hulland pipeline route between Kirk Ireton and the B5023 Derby Road NGR SK 2706 5082 to SK 2867 5215. The area was of archaeological interest due to possible medieval earthwork remains in the vicinity including house platforms and evidence of ridge and furrow cultivation. The scope of works consisted of monitoring the topsoil stripping of the pipe trench with a contingency for further monitoring of trench excavation if archaeological remains were identified. No medieval remains were discovered, although two post-medieval features were recorded.
