Chir is characterized by considerable natural variation like other wind pollinated conifers, thereby imparting great scope for genetic improvement through selection. Only very elementary work has been done on its vegetative propagation, variation studies, provenance testing, seed stand and plus tree selection and their evaluation in the last twenty years or so. This work is presently reviewed under different headings and the future line of action for its improvement through selection and establishment of first generation seed orchards has been highlighted.
