ABSTRACT Sustainability has become a key factor in all European policies. In the primary sector, the adoption of new measures aimed at promoting greener and more sustainable production has generated various impacts. This article examines the ambition of the European Union Member States in setting agri‐environmental objectives within their strategic plans. The research is based on the analysis of the results indicators of the European Commission, grouping countries according to their environmental commitment to subsequently assess their current level of progress towards the established final targets. The results show heterogeneity in the set objectives and limitations in achieving those objectives. This situation highlights the need for adjustments to ensure a more effective and equitable application in view of the upcoming reform of the Common Agricultural Policy for 2028–2034.
