Abstract It is possible that the theatrical production of Luis Vélez de Guevara reached as many as 400 titles, a figure surpassed only by Lope de Vega. Our understanding of Vélez’s work has expanded considerably thanks to recent scholarship, the publication of new editions and translations, and the staging of his plays. The attention of numerous specialists has focused on his prolific output and on his role as a key figure linking Lope de Vega and Calderón. Nevertheless, given the current conditions of research and theatrical production, it remains difficult to gain an in-depth understanding of writers such as Vélez: a paradoxical dramatist who enjoyed enormous popularity in his own time but who now occupies a secondary position in modern criticism. This article seeks to serve as a guide for those interested in staging or studying Luis Vélez without necessarily being specialists.
