Introduction and Objective: Shared decision-making (SDM) is a core component of person-centered care, yet its use in hospitalized people with diabetes is not known. As diabetes technology expands, new opportunities may exist to involve patients in their care. We evaluated the degree of SDM experienced by hospitalized patients across three levels of diabetes technology exposure. Methods: Participants with insulin-requiring diabetes enrolled in a clinical trial (NCT05590143) and an observational study with the same eligibility criteria completed the Shared Decision-Making Questionnaire 9 (SDM-Q-9) survey. Three levels of exposure to technology were assessed: nurse-driven automated insulin delivery (AID) (n=36), CGM alone (n=34), and usual care without diabetes technology (n=29). Results: Participants (mean age 55 years, 39% female, 61% Black, and 33% White) overall SDM-Q-9 scores (scale: 0-100 for low-high SDM), reported as median (IQR), were 76.7 (45.6-87.2), 61.1 (42.2-80.0), and 55.6 (24.4-73.3) for the AID, CGM-only, and no-technology groups, respectively. The percentage of participants reporting SDM (completely, strongly, or somewhat agree) was 80.5%, 76.5%, and 58.6% in the AID, CGM-only, and no-technology groups, respectively. Conclusion: In this cohort of insulin-requiring hospitalized patients, SDM was highest among those using AID, highlighting the potential of AID to support more person-centered care in the inpatient setting.
