AbstractInfluenza A viruses have caused several major pandemics throughout human history. Although sustained human-to-human transmission has not yet occurred, the virus possesses characteristics that could enable it to evolve into a future pandemic strain. This article reviews the biology of Influenza A(H5N1), its historical development, pandemic potential, recent epidemiological trends, and the measures required to prevent a global outbreak.
