Abstract The Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) in India acts as an important social protection system to address both issues of maternal malnutrition and the problem of wages lost by pregnant and lactating mothers. Through the provision of a cash transfer benefit worth US54 paid out in stages, the scheme encourages various health behaviors that are vital for ensuring that mothers register their pregnancy in time, have antenatal care (ANC) checkups, and that the baby is adequately vaccinated. According to case evidence, PMMVY has been effective in improving maternal health outcomes through increased utilization of institutional delivery and better nutrition. But there are socio-economic constraints that often act as intermediaries to the success of the scheme. Information © The Authors 2026
