Radionuclide migration in the Opalinus Clay is controlled by molecular diffusion and sorption on the inherent clay minerals, which have been investigated since decades in laboratory and field scale experiments in the Mont Terri rock laboratory (Leupin et al. 2017). All diffusion studies have been accompanied by numerical simulations as they are essential not only for the interpretation of the experiments, but also for the optimisation of the experimental design.
