The mechanical removal of topsoil within the footprint as well as the excavation of the footing trenches for the new extension revealed a made ground layer devoid of archaeological features. The mechanical stripping of the driveway area also yielded no results. The excavations at By the Pond failed to reveal any archaeological features, likely due to the nature of truncation and disturbance by made ground deposits (3), (5), and (8). The single fragment of post-medieval roof tile present was recovered from a deposit of uncertain nature, and thus, does not inform wholly of the archaeological activity in this area.
William Gilbert (Mon,) studied this question.
