This interview is a part of the “Punjabi in BC” oral history project (2019-2023). “Punjabi in BC” is comprised of interviews with over 50 K-12 teachers, language advocates, journalists, and writers who have contributed to the life of the Punjabi language in British Columbia, Canada. The subject of this interview, Jasbir Singh Gandham, is an advocate and educator who immigrated to Burnaby, British Columbia, in the summer of 1977 after spending eighteen years in England. As a member of the Khalsa Diwan Society and the Canadian Sikh Study & Teaching Society, he aims to preserve Punjabi in Canada. In the full interview, Jasbir Singh Gandham discusses the initial struggles to conduct Punjabi language classes, the importance of learning Punjabi, and the significance of learning one’s language to understand and maintain one's roots.
