This interview is a part of the “Punjabi in BC” oral history project (2019-2023). “Punjabi in BC” is comprised of interviews with over 50 K-12 teachers, language advocates, journalists, and writers who have contributed to the life of the Punjabi language in British Columbia, Canada.The subject of this interview is Harpreet Sekha, a fiction and non-fiction Punjabi author based in BC, Canada. Harpreet’s written work explores themes and experiences that resonate with South Asian Canadians, such as gender inequality, social justice, and the migrant experience. His body of work includes the non-fiction book Taxinaama; the novel Hanerey Raah; and short story anthologies Bi Ji Muskra Paye, Baaran Boohey, and Prism. In the interview, Harpreet Sekha talks about the influence of his job experiences on his journalistic career, the real-life experiences of immigrants which inspired his books, readership of Punjabi literature, and the impact of awards on writers.
