Abstract The problem of gender inequality at work has been a nagging worldwide challenge in spite of the remarkable improvement in education and work opportunities. The paper examines the orientation, reason and implications of gender inequality in the workplace and specifically on the developing economies such as India. The study focuses on the gap in wages, gaps in promotions, discrimination at work place and the socio-cultural aspects that make people unequal. The survey and interviews also serve as a mixed-method, which allows outlining structural and behavioural barriers to women in the study. The results suggest that gender inequality runs very deep within the society, in terms of organizational and societal norms that are upheld and in the form of unconscious biases. The paper ends by proposing some policy reforms, changes within organizations and awareness campaigns to advance gender equality.
