The evaluation fieldwork comprised the excavation of 7 trenches measuring 30m x 1.8m. The trenches were positioned to provide a representative sample of the site. With approval of the curator, Trench G2.94 was not excavated due to an unexpected overhead cable. The trench lay directly under the cable. Trenches were set out and overburden was stripped from the trenches by a mechanical excavator. With the exception of trench G2.98, in which a deep alluvial deposit was identified, machining was conducted under archaeological supervision to the top of the natural substrate, which was the level at which archaeological features were first encountered. Discussions between National Grid and ECCPS decided that the safest and most expedient way of progressing with the evaluation was to open and backfill trenches in a single day, leaving no excavations open overnight. ECCPS was provided with the opportunity to monitor and sign off trenches prior to backfill. In March 2022, Cotswold Archaeology carried out an archaeological evaluation land to the west of Pebmarsh Road, Alphamstone, Essex. A total of seven trenches were excavated, two of which revealed reliable archaeological features and a further two which revealed potentially natural features. Two undated ditches were investigated, along with a series of ditches/gullies and pits, these features may suggest settlement activity, however they were undated and their extent undefined.
