Abstract This paper presents the results of a preliminary investigation of EDP-XPERT, an expert system for assisting computer audit specialists' judgments on the reliability of controls in advanced computer environments. The issue of how an expert system in auditing might be evaluated is also presented, along with some criteria that should be considered. In addition, we collected some attitudinal data on what should be expected and demanded of an expert system.
