Structure Sense VI: Purpose as the Structural Cut Civilization Physics — Series: Structure Sense This article develops the sixth part of the Structure Sense series by identifying the missing selector between structure sense and theory: purpose. It argues that purpose is not merely subjective motive, strategic intention, or cosmic teleology. In cognition, purpose functions as the directional constraint that cuts an undifferentiated field of phenomena into objects, relations, variables, boundaries, and mechanisms. The central claim is that explanation does not begin from raw facts. Facts become intelligible only after a purposive structural cut determines what counts as signal, what counts as noise, what belongs together, and what demands explanation. A shallow cut labels visible outcomes. A deeper cut identifies the generative structure that produces those outcomes across changing conditions. The article develops this argument through several linked mechanisms: Purpose functions as the cognitive structural cut that makes phenomena available for explanation. A structural cut partitions and weights reality by deciding which features are load-bearing, peripheral, or negligible. Shallow cuts label outcomes, while deep cuts identify generative relations and boundary conditions. Explanatory compression measures structural economy: broader coverage, fewer assumptions, fewer patches, and stronger prediction. Governance capacity tests whether a cut identifies stable intervention points while remaining reality-coupled and corrigible. Purpose does not make truth arbitrary; it selects the entry point through which reality can constrain explanation. This article extends the Structure Sense framework into structural epistemology. If earlier essays argued that cognition is structural and that formalization follows structural contact, this piece explains how a frame becomes selected in the first place. Purpose provides the cut. Structure provides the explanation. Prediction and governance test the depth of that cut. The result is not a theory of everything, but a theory of how explanation acquires footing before formalization.
