ABSTRACT ASTM C1353, Standard Test Method for Abrasion Resistance of Dimension Stone Subjected to Foot Traffic Using a Rotary Platform Abraser, defines a method for evaluating the abrasion resistance of natural stones used as flooring materials subjected to pedestrian traffic. The standard requires 1,000 revolutions (r) and a 1,000 g accessory weight per wheel; however, these conditions lengthen the test duration and reduce the abrasive wheel life. Although the standard prescribes fixed test conditions, this study investigates the influence of key test parameters, namely, the number of revolutions (100–1,000 r) and accessory weights (500 and 1,000 g), on the rotary platform abrasion index values of 15 stone types. The results demonstrate that natural stones with lower abrasion resistance exhibit a markedly greater reduction in the resistance under an increased applied weight. Comparison of abrasion index values obtained at 1,000 r with those measured at 100 r intervals shows that results at 700 r deviate by less than approximately ±5 % under a 1,000 g load and ±4 % under a 500 g load, indicating strong consistency. Although both applied weights and number of revolutions significantly affect the abrasion behavior, tests conducted at 700 r yielded abrasion index values close to those obtained under standard 1,000 r test conditions.
