Abstract

Abstract This study sets out to document issues raised in mother-daughter sex communication and their perceived influence on the sex practices among urban adolescent females selected from upper primary schools in Westlands constituency. The researcher’s goal was to better understand mothers-daughter sex communication using both adolescents’ and mothers’ views.The study was guided by one objective, to establish the issues raised by the nature of mother daughter relationship in sex communication. The study employed a mixed research approach. The qualitative sample was drawn using purposive and snowball sampling methods and quantitative data was drawn using simple random sampling, whereby 156 respondents were selected for the study. Furthermore, the data were collected through focus group discussions and Interviews. The study established that most mothers are reluctant to teach their daughters about sexual matters. They hope that their daughters will get this information from other sources like social media and relatives. Another issue raised from mother-daughter sex communication is that mothers approach the issue of sex mainly from the aspect of abstinence.
