India has set an ambitious national goal to become a developed nation by the year 2047, when the country will complete 100 years of independence. This long term vision, popularly known as “Viksit Bharat 2047,” aims at transforming India into a prosperous, technologically advanced, inclusive, and globally competitive economy. Among the many sectors that contribute to this transformation, commerce plays a particularly strategic role. Commerce connects production with consumption, facilitates domestic and international trade, encourages entrepreneurship, and strengthens financial systems that support economic expansion. The commerce sector in India has experienced rapid transformation in recent decades. Liberalization policies, globalization, technological advancement, and digital innovation have significantly expanded trade networks and financial activities. Digital commerce, ecommerce platforms, fintech services, and integrated supply chains have changed the way businesses operate and interact with consumers. These developments have created new opportunities for economic growth, employment generation, and global competitiveness. This research paper examines the strategic importance of commerce in achieving the national vision of Viksit Bharat 2047. The study focuses on key areas such as trade expansion, digital commerce, entrepreneurship, financial inclusion, employment generation, and sustainable business practices. Using secondary data from government reports, economic surveys, and research publications, the paper highlights how commerce contributes to economic development and nation building. The findings indicate that strengthening commercial infrastructure, promoting innovation, supporting MSMEs, and expanding global trade will be essential for achieving the vision of a developed India by 2047.
