Abstract The demand for enhanced safety in marine transportation continues to grow due to the potential for various impact loads to affect structural components. In stranding incidents, ships may experience a range of impact scenarios depending on seabed characteristics. This work conducts a numerical stranding analysis of the engineered mechanical design, idealized as the bottom structure of a double-hull chemical tanker, accounting for interactions between the structure and striking obstructions, such as ice and rock. Numerical simulation, i.e., a nonlinear finite element (NLFE) analysis, simulates the defined stranding scenario using the explicit-dynamic methodology by comparing two contact modes between the involved objects: powered-hard impact and lateral penetration. Initial benchmark verification demonstrates good agreement, ensuring the reliability of the developed stranding model. Overall evaluations of energy and force are conducted for proposed scenarios. Finally, the general trends in damage per indenter type and contact preferences in the present work are summarized.
