A geophysical survey (magnetometer) was undertaken by Orkney Research Centre for Archaeology (ORCA) commissioned by Turner & Townsend on a 1-hectare area at Brae School, Delting, Mainland, Shetland Islands. The survey was requested by the Shetland Islands Archaeologist in response to the planning application for proposed new school buildings with associated playground and sports facilities (SIC Planning Ref: 2024/208/PAN). The results of the geophysical survey show a group of positive anomalies in the northeast of the Site that may be archaeological in nature, although it is possible that they could reflect the made-up nature of the ground underneath the pitch or be geological in nature. The remaining features reflect modern activity, including the drainage network underlying the pitch, an area of magnetic disturbance in an area currently used for car-parking and the ferrous response from fencelines and sports equipment around the edge of the pitch.
