Photonic Universe Hypothesis (PUH) — T266 — CLARIFICATION / TERMINOLOGY NOTE. Several foundational PUH papers refer to "the eight" fundamental objects of the E8 condensate, and the number eight recurs throughout. This note documents that "the eight" is used in THREE distinct group-theoretic senses — different mathematical objects that coincide in number only because, for E8, the rank equals the number of independent Casimir invariants (both eight). Keeping them distinct matters because the real-form determination of T265 depends on which sense is meant. THE THREE SENSES: (1) Eight CASIMIR INVARIANTS — invariant polynomials of degrees 2, 8, 12, 14, 18, 20, 24, 30, CONSTANT on any representation; they label WHICH representation (which Casimir leaf) a state occupies. Sense of T172 ("a particle is a state with all 8 Casimirs fixed") and T182 (coupling constants from degrees). (2) Eight CARTAN GENERATORS — a maximal commuting subalgebra H₁. . H₈, DIRECTIONS in the algebra; their eigenvalues (weights) label states WITHIN a representation. Sense of T167 ("rank (E8) =8 commuting generators"). (3) Physical CHARGES as WEIGHTS — colour, electric charge, weak isospin, hypercharge assigned to Cartan eigenvalues, which VARY state to state within a multiplet (a red quark and a blue quark = different weights of one representation, identical Casimir values). Sense of T167/T211 (colour = SU (3) Cartan, charge = U (1) Cartan). KEY DISTINCTION: senses (1) and (3) are routinely conflated because both are called "quantum numbers, " but they are CATEGORICALLY different. Casimir invariants are constant on a representation (do NOT distinguish a red quark from a blue one) ; weights vary within it (they do). Mass and spin behave like sense (1) ; colour, charge, weak isospin, hypercharge behave like sense (3). T172's "eight Casimirs" mixes the two categories — the documented imprecision. WORKED EXAMPLE — T167 SELF-CORRECTS: T167 first writes the heuristic rank (E8) =8=4grav+1EM+3colour, then in its verification line corrects to the rigorous decomposition rank (SU (3) ) =2, rank (E6) =6, 2+6=8. The "3colour" of the mnemonic is the THREE colour CHARGES (three weights of the SU (3) fundamental) while the actual colour CARTAN rank is TWO. So "4+1+3" is a physical mnemonic for the charges (sense 3), NOT the Cartan-generator count (sense 2) ; T167's own verification says so by giving 2+6. LOCATING T265: the real-form determination (real rank 8 favours the split form) requires the eight quantum numbers to be simultaneously-real CARTAN observables — sense (2) / (3), weights — NOT Casimir invariants — sense (1). Real rank constrains weights (which live in the Cartan), not Casimir invariants (real-valued on any real form regardless of real rank). So T265 is sound IF the physical charges are all simultaneously-real Cartan weights; if some of T172's eight are Casimir invariants (as mass and spin appear to be), those do not contribute to the real-rank requirement, and the count of genuinely Cartan-type charges may be fewer than eight. The weight-count is the quantity to compute. Resolves NO physics; removes an ambiguity of language and locates precisely where a real computation (the Cartan-vs-Casimir character of each of T172's eight quantum numbers, via representation-theory tools) is still required.
