The Cognitive Friction Threshold introduces a new conceptual framework for explaining why some technological innovations produce lasting behavioral and organizational change while others remain confined to experimentation. Rather than focusing on technological capability alone, the paper argues that durable adoption occurs when reductions in perceived cognitive effort cross a critical threshold, making new routines cognitively less costly than established ones. Drawing on Digital Anthropology, the paper distinguishes three forms of human friction—transactional, behavioral, and cognitive—and proposes that generative AI represents the first large-scale technology primarily focused on reducing cognitive friction. The paper develops the Cognitive Friction Threshold (CFT) as the missing behavioral mechanism linking AI capability to persistent habit formation, organizational adaptation, and enterprise transformation. The manuscript positions this framework in relation to major research traditions, including the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Diffusion of Innovation, habit formation, behavioral economics, organizational routines, dynamic capabilities, and social epistemology. It develops formal propositions describing threshold dynamics, forcing events, habit persistence, and organizational change, and presents publication-quality conceptual figures illustrating the theory. Beyond its theoretical contribution, the paper discusses implications for enterprise AI adoption, knowledge work, AI governance, organizational behavior, digital transformation, and strategic management.
