Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming labour markets across the global creative economy, and the film industry stands at a critical inflection point in this transformation. While public debate has largely fixated on generative AI's potential to replace screenwriters, directors, and performers, the more consequential and immediate disruption is unfolding at a different level: the systematic automation of production workflows that have historically sustained entry-level creative careers. This research examines the 2026 partnership between Google DeepMind and independent film studio A24 as a contemporary case study in this evolving dynamic. Through qualitative analysis of industry documentation, corporate communications, labour organisation reports, and academic literature, the study investigates how workflow-oriented artificial intelligence — designed to optimise scheduling, budgeting, storyboarding, and production coordination — is reshaping employment structures within professional filmmaking. The findings identify three interconnected mechanisms through which AI affects job opportunity: first, the direct automation of routine cognitive tasks that traditionally employed junior and mid-level creative professionals; second, the erosion of apprenticeship pathways through which industry expertise has historically been cultivated; and third, the concentration of advanced AI infrastructure among financially powerful organisations, creating structural barriers that may exclude independent studios and freelance workers from the benefits of AI-assisted production. The study further demonstrates that these labour implications extend beyond Hollywood, with particular consequences for global outsourcing networks — notably India's creative economy, where an estimated 300,000 animation, VFX, and post-production professionals face compounding displacement pressure from both domestic automation and declining international demand for offshore pre-production work. Crucially, the research argues that AI need not be an instrument of wholesale displacement. The Google–A24 partnership introduces a governance model — conceptualised here as the Data Firewall Model — that separates workflow collaboration from intellectual property extraction, and prioritises human creative authority throughout the production process. When governed responsibly, workflow-oriented AI may create new professional roles in AI oversight, production management, and human–AI collaboration, even as it displaces others. The research concludes that the net impact of AI on job opportunity within the creative industries will be determined less by the technology itself than by the governance frameworks, workforce reskilling investments, and institutional commitments that accompany its adoption.
