Space Defense Capability in the Common Security and Defense Policy of the European Union

Space defense capability of European leaders and the actions of space-related agencies, policies, and programs in Europe extend the content of the Common Security and Defense Policy (CSDP) of the European Union (EU). This article explores the space defense capability of the CSDP. The European Space Agency, the European Space Policy, and the EU Space Surveillance and Tracking bring new complexity to the CSDP. The article explains the connection of these policies, agencies, and programs with defense and their importance within the framework of developments in the EU. It also clarifies how space policy, expands the scope of the CSDP. In this context, this article explores the topics of space and defense to better understand CSDP. The study also outlines the contributions of the EU and North Atlantic Treaty Organization, emphasizing the Strategic Compass and the Strategic Concept, respectively. This study provides insights on new meaning for CSDP in adding space to security and defense issues therein.
